But what is a close up magician?
It's someone who performs right in front of people. No need for a stage or any large props. It's all done in a "mix and mingle" style and is also sometimes called "Table Magic". Basically if it's performed a few feet in front of your eyes then it's close up magic!
Mike's approach is different to most other magicians. He doesn't show off or perform endless card tricks. No cheesy old-fashioned routines using a piece of rope ("I've cut it in half - now it's back together again") or red sponge balls ("Hold on to these two balls - now there's three") - instead Mike gets everyone involved and builds an intriguing shared experience. Many of his routines use a mixture of mind reading and psychology - showing how you can read someone's thoughts, influence their decisions and detect when they are lying or telling the truth. It's intelligent entertainment for a sophisticated adult audience.
