There are some classic routines in magic. You make something appear, change, disappear and then reappear in a totally different place. Often this will be done with playing cards, but when the card reappears how do you know it's the same one as earlier and not just one that looks like it? The answer is to get someone to sign the card so it is completely unique. Although these days, with worries about "identity theft", people often just write their name or draw something rather than use their actual signature, which is fine - the card has still been made into a unique object. So when it vanishes and then instantly reappears in a completely impossible place it's a great bit of magic. Many people are a bit concerned though when asked to write on one of my playing cards. They say "...but if I sign the card won't that ruin the deck?" to which I usually say "Don't worry, I've got a few spares at home..."
